Week 9 Combined Capsules

Several games across the state have changed dates due to possible inclement weather. Here’s a look at Thursday games involving Greenville and Spartanburg teams.
THURSDAY
Class 1A No. 5 Southside Christian (5-2, 4-0 Region I-1A) at Ware Shoals (1-7, 0-5 Region I-1A)
Series record: Southside Christian leads 7-4. The Sabres have won each of the last seven meetings, including a 35-0 victory last season.
Last week: Southside Christian beat McCormick 40-14; Ware Shoals lost to Calhoun Falls 8-6.

About the Sabres: With every passing week, Southside Christian’s offense gets more balanced. It was all passing all the time early on this season, but the running game came to life once region play began. In last week’s win, Kaiser rushed 22 times for 161 yards and two touchdowns. Chandler, the Sabres’ leading receiver with 34 catches for 499 yards and six touchdowns, and Brewster also ran for scores last week. Southside Christian has 18 passing touchdowns and 17 rushing touchdowns this season.
About the Hornets: Ware Shoals looked as if it might hang on for its first region win last week before a blocked punt in the fourth quarter led to Calhoun Falls’ game-tying score and game-winning two-point conversion. The Hornets were hampered by 13 penalties. Ware Shoals’ lone score came on a 58-yard pass from Johnson to Jayce Medlin early in the second quarter.

Landrum (4-4, 0-3 Region I-2A) at Liberty (5-3, 1-2 Region I-2A), 7 p.m.
Series record: Landrum has won each of the last five meetings to tie the series 8-8. The Cardinals won 21-0 last season.
Last week: Landrum lost to Abbeville 56-0; Liberty lost to Ninety Six 56-39.

About the Cardinals: After closing out non-region play with a 74-point showing against Blue Ridge, Landrum has managed just 35 points over its first three region games. In being shut out by Abbeville for the second consecutive season last Friday, the Cardinals were held to 56 yards of total offense while allowing 570. Link has rushed for nearly 1,300 yards and 16 touchdowns this season.
About the Red Devils: Like Landrum, Liberty leans on its running game offensively although Logan Smith threw a pair of touchdown passes in last week’s shootout loss to Ninety Six. Smith also ran for two scores,while Austin Smith ran for another. Logan Smith’s 67-yard scoring run with 33 seconds left in the first half gave Liberty a 24-21 lead before Ninety Six scored on the final play of the half to take a 28-24 lead into halftime. The Wildcats then returned the second-half kickoff for a touchdown to take control of the game.
