Week 4 Previews: Spartanburg County

Wade Hampton (0-3, 0-0) at No. 7 Byrnes (2-1, 0-0)
Byrnes bounced back from a heartbreaking loss to Irmo in Week 2 with a 49-9 win at rival Greer, avenging its 2024 loss to the Yellow Jackets. Star junior running back Tre Segura had 145 yards on just 10 carries and two touchdowns to lead the Rebels. He also caught two passes for 50 yards and another score. Quarterback Caine Rogers completed 9-of-11 passes for 164 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions also for Byrnes. For the season, Segura has 399 yards rushing and is averaging 10 yards per carry.
Wade Hampton is coming off a bye after falling to Easley 35-21 in Week 2, extending its losing skid to 17 consecutive games. Freshman quarterback Parker McCrory has thrown for 533 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions for the Generals this season. Sophomore Coleman Batson has rushed for 171 yards.
Riverside (1-2, 0-0) at No. 8 Dorman (2-1, 0-0)
This will be a matchup of two teams coming off what were probably unwanted byes after each suffered heartbreaking losses in Week 2. Dorman rallied from a 27-14 halftime deficit only to fall at home to Greenwood, 42-41, in overtime. The Cavaliers led 35-27 in the fourth quarter before the Eagles got a touchdown and two-point conversion with five seconds left to force overtime. A missed extra point in OT saddled Dorman with the loss. Nick Means ran for three touchdowns, while Isaac Tate added a 47-yard touchdown run, to lead the Cavaliers.
Riverside will try to bounce back from a 37-35 loss at Christ Church two weeks ago. Keyon Knowles’ third touchdown of the game cut Christ Church’s lead to 34-33 with 34 seconds left. Speedy Taylor ran for the two-point conversion to give the Warriors a 35-34 lead, but the Cavaliers drove down the field and kicked a 35-yard field goal as time expired for the win. Junior quarterback Gideon Merhib completed 21-of-24 passes for 251 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Warriors.
Boiling Springs (2-1, 0-0) at No. 10 Gaffney (1-2, 0-0)
Following a bye week last Friday, Boiling Springs will look to pick up where it left off from in a 56-0 win over Chapman in Week 2. Eight different Bulldogs had touchdowns in the win. Josh Kahl completed 12-of-17 passes for 191 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Nine different Bulldogs caught passes led by TreSean Suber, who had two receptions for 66 yards and a touchdown. In addition to the shutout, Boiling Springs’ defense forced five turnovers including four interceptions. Will Gibeck and Demarcus Means each had interception returns for touchdowns. Tyvion Hall, who had pick-sixes in each of the Bulldogs’ first two games, added a fumble return for a score last Friday.
Gaffney also had a bye last Friday after a crushing 17-14 loss at Greenville in Week 2. The Indians had a 14-3 lead in the fourth quarter before the Red Raiders rallied. The off week has been anything but normal in Gaffney. Jayvon Gilmore, who had been splitting time at quarterback with Greenville transfer Banks Bouton, withdrew from school. Two days later, he decommitted from Arkansas. In the loss to Greenville, Josiah Hill rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown to lead the Indians. Bouton ran 10 times for 73 yards and Gaffney’s other score.
Spartanburg (1-2, 0-0) at Eastside (3-0, 0-0)
After losses to the top two ranked Class 5A teams in the state to open the season, Spartanburg got in the win column with a 50-7 victory at Broome in Week 2. The Vikings jumped out to a 41-7 lead after one quarter. Trenton Lynch had 161 yards rushing on just eight carries and scored three touchdowns. Sophomore quarterback Chris Colin completed 6-of-10 passes for 153 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions also for Spartanburg.
Eastside comes roaring into region play following an 807-yard performance in a 56-21 win at Blue Ridge last Friday. The Eagles put up 697 of those yards on the ground. Kelyn Durham carried 19 times for 266 yards and one touchdown, while quarterback Peyton Schrader had 175 yards on 13 carries. Lucas Tankersley added 146 yards and three touchdowns on just eight rushing attempts, as well as a team-high 13 tackles on defense. Schrader completed just four passes for 110 yards, but three went for touchdowns.
Other Games
Chesnee (3-1) at Class 3A No. 2 Woodruff (4-0)
Woodruff looks to keep the momentum going after a 48-6 win at Woodmont last Friday. Since opening the season with a 21-13 win over Clinton, the Wolverines have averaged 48 points per game. Junior quarterback Connor Davis had his biggest night this year as he completed 23-of-30 passes for 354 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. He also ran eight times for 47 yards and two scores. Star running back Aiden Gibson rushed for 119 yards and one touchdown and caught three passes for 68 yards. The only downer last Friday for Woodruff came when standout receiver/returner Kori Moates left with an injury and spent the rest of the night on crutches.
Chesnee is coming off a thrilling win over R-S Central (NC), 28-21, last Friday. After R-S Central rallied from a 21-7 deficit to tie the game midway through the fourth quarter, the Eagles had an immediate response. Evan-Reece Lawter had a 59-yard run to the six-yard line and Kale Thrift scored from two yards out two plays later with 4:50 left. Braylon Blanton’s interception helped Chesnee hold on for the win. Lawter had 131 yards rushing and two touchdowns, including one on the final play of the first half to snap a 7-7 tie, and 102 yards passing for the Eagles. Chesnee pushed the lead to 21-7 when Marquez Franklin opened the second half with a 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
Class 3A No. 3 Mountain View (4-0) at Anderson Cavaliers (1-2)
Makorean Anderson’s video game stats season continued in Mountain View’s 41-19 win at Crescent. The Stars’ quarterback rushed 20 times for 250 yards and three touchdowns, and completed 19-of-24 passes for 203 yards and three more scores. For the season, Anderson has thrown for 10 touchdowns and 13 incompletions (one interception) and 918 yards. He’s rushed for 560 yards and 10 touchdowns. KD Hainsworth has 21 catches for 316 yards and five touchdowns, while Juice Miller has 15 receptions for 249 yards and two scores also for Mountain View. Jacobie Smith leads the Stars’ defense with 28 tackles, including 11 tackles-for-loss.
Anderson, which is made up of homeschooled and private school players, is coming off a 46-14 win at Andrews (NC) last Friday.
Christ Church (2-1) at Chapman (0-4)
Chapman is off to its worst start since going 1-9 in 2008, but it’s not from a lack of effort. The Panthers are coming off another heartbreaking loss last Friday as they fell at reigning Class 2A state champion Clinton, 40-34, in overtime. On a night in which Chapman put up more than 400 yards of total offense, Jasiah Copeland’s third rushing touchdown came with 41 seconds left in regulation to help force overtime but the Panthers failed to score in OT. Copeland finished with 161 yards rushing on 24 carries. Bryson Cothran passed for 162 yards, including a 99-yard touchdown to Kelton Tucker, also for Chapman.
Christ Church had its bye week last Friday after a wild 37-35 win over Riverside in Week 2. The Cavaliers made a 35-yard field goal as time expired to earn the victory. Junior quarterback Judd Windham completed 14-of-16 passes for 167 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions, while also rushing for 32 yards and a score for Christ Church. Michael Martin rushed for 75 yards and three touchdowns also for the Cavs. Martin has 240 yards rushing and six scores this season.
Broome (1-3) at Class 3A No. 8 Powdersville (3-1)
Broome will try to rebound from a 42-18 loss to Emerald last week. The Centurions fell behind 21-0 and could never recover. Senior quarterback Jameson Dearybury had a big night despite the loss. He completed 22-of-36 passes for 342 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. He also led Broome in rushing with 61 yards on 15 carries. Brayden Simpson did most of the receiving damage for the Centurions as he caught seven passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns, including a pair of 70-yard scores in the second quarter.
Broome will have a stern test in Powdersville, which is coming off a 35-7 win at Pendleton. The Patriots’ lone loss this season came in Week 0 against Seneca, which is currently undefeated.
Landrum (3-1) at West-Oak (2-2)
Landrum bounced back in a big way from its first loss two weeks ago with a 63-13 win over Asheville Christian (NC) last Friday. Braylon Revis rushed for three touchdowns and caught another, while freshman JP Branyon ran for two scores for the Cardinals. Landrum forced four turnovers, including three interceptions, and had a punt return for a touchdown by Garrett Bridges. Revis leads Landrum in rushing and receiving this season. He has 280 yards rushing and eight touchdowns, along with 12 catches for 184 yards and a score.
West-Oak is coming off a 34-7 loss to Franklin (GA) last Friday.
