Week 5 Previews: Spartanburg County
REGION II-5A
No. 7 Dorman (3-1, 1-0) at No. 6 Byrnes (3-1, 1-0)
The 68th edition of this rivalry looks to be one of the top games in the state Friday. Byrnes raced out to a 35-0 halftime lead last week and cruised to a 45-3 win over Wade Hampton. Three different quarterbacks combined for 265 yards passing, led by Caine Rogers who completed 13-of-18 for 181 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. The Rebels piled up 192 yards on the ground, led by Tre Segarra’s 75 yards and two touchdowns on just four carries. Half of Segarra’s receptions also went for touchdowns as he had two catches for 51 yards and a score. Ten different Byrnes players caught passes led by Chanin Harris’ five receptions for 56 yards.
Dorman jumped out to a 28-0 lead early in the second quarter and went on to a 31-3 victory over Riverside last Friday. The Cavaliers held the Warriors to less than 100 yards of total offense. Linebacker Jordan Darby had nine tackles, including 3.5 tackles-for-loss and 1.5 sacks, to lead that defensive effort. Zavion Meadows had five tackles, including four tackles-for-loss, also for the Cavaliers. Meadows was chosen to play for the North squad of all-stars at the Touchstone Energy Bowl.
No. 10 Gaffney (2-2, 1-0) at Spartanburg (2-2, 1-0)
Rivalry Friday in Region II continues at Spartanburg where the Vikings and Gaffney will lock horns for the 110th time. Spartanburg has outscored the Indians 2,031 to 2,028 all-time, but Gaffney has the series lead at 54-52-3.
Last Friday, Spartanburg rallied from a 21-17 halftime deficit as it outscored Eastside 21-0 in the third quarter on the way to a 48-34 win. Standout junior running back Trenton Lynch rushed for 208 yards and three touchdowns and caught four passes for 65 yards and two more scores. Quarterback Trey Burke, who was named to the North squad for the Touchstone Energy Bowl this week, completed 22-of-26 passes for 222 yards and three touchdowns. Vikings’ lineman Brendon Carson also made the North team.
Gaffney’s defense came up with four interceptions last week as the Indians topped Boiling Springs, 34-7. While it was a rough night for opposing quarterbacks, it wasn’t for Gaffney’s Banks Bouton. In his first game as the full-time QB, Bouton threw for 273 yards with two touchdowns and rushed for 25 yards and another score. Brady Smith caught five passes for 110 yards and a touchdown also for the Indians. One of those with interceptions for Gaffney was Zyon Ratchford, who also made the North squad of all-stars this week.
Eastside (3-1, 0-1) at Boiling Springs (2-2, 0-1)
Boiling Springs is coming off a 34-7 loss to Gaffney last week. The Bulldogs were held to less than 200 yards of offense and suffered four interceptions. Imri Logan’s 17-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter helped Boiling Springs avoid the shutout. Dennis Glenn led the Bulldogs’ defense with 10 tackles, including two tackles-for-loss. Earlier this week, Boiling Springs wide receiver Grayson Crowe and tight end Jaiden Grate were selected for the North squad of all-stars to play in the Touchstone Energy Bowl.
Eastside will try to get back on track after a hard-fought 48-34 loss to Spartanburg to open region play last week. The Eagles took a 21-17 lead into halftime before the Vikings outscored Eastside 21-0 in the third quarter to take command. Lucas Tankersley had a huge night despite the loss. He had 229 yards on 22 carries with three touchdowns on offense with a team-high 13 tackles on defense. Quarterback Peyton Schrader has 107 yards passing and 71 rushing with a pair of rushing touchdowns. Cayden Workman caught five passes for 78 yards and had 11 tackles defensively also for Eastside.
Other games
Class 3A No. 2 Woodruff (5-0) at Wren (2-2)
Woodruff travels to Piedmont Friday in hopes of its first 6-0 start since 2014. The Wolverines collected 487 yards of total offense, including 366 on the ground, in a 52-17 win over rival Chesnee last Friday. Aiden Gibson had 15 carries for 146 yards and two touchdowns, and caught two passes for 15 yards and another score. Jaylen Lyles added 111 yards and two touchdowns on just five rushing attempts, while Kayden Barnaby took his lone carry 49 yards for a score also for Woodruff. Adrian Hill led the Wolverines’ defense with 13 tackles, including three tackles-for-loss. Wide receiver Kori Moates and offensive lineman Travon Lee will represent the Wolverines on the North squad at the Touchstone Energy Bowl.
Wren was off last week after falling at TL Hanna, 40-27, in Week 3. Muntu Brown has 602 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Hurricanes this season.
Broome (2-3) at Blacksburg (0-5)
Broome rolled up 628 yards of total offense to pull out a wild 53-46 win at Powdersville. Jameson Dearybury completed 25-of-29 passes for 372 yards and three touchdowns, while Tyqwon Booker ran 37 times for 238 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Centurions. Those 25 completions went to just four receivers. Asher Littlejohn had five catches for 142 yards and a touchdown. Reece Waugerman caught 11 balls for 134 yards and a score, while Brayden Simpson had six receptions for 84 yards and the other passing touchdown. Littlejohn will represent Broome on the squad of North all-stars at the Touchstone Energy Bowl this season.
Blacksburg is coming off a 40-6 loss to Central last Friday.
Landrum (3-2) at Blue Ridge (3-1)
Landrum will try to rebound from a stunning 36-16 loss at West-Oak last Friday. It marked West-Oak’s first win over a SCHSL program since the Warriors defeated Calhoun Falls on Sept. 22, 2023. The Cardinals trailed 23-0 after three quarters, which proved to be too big of a hole to climb out of in the fourth. When Landrum and Blue Ridge last met in 2023, the Cardinals rolled to a 74-34 win.
Blue Ridge will try to start a season 4-1 for the first time since 2014 as it wraps up non-region play Friday. The Tigers are coming off a wild 50-42 win over Pickens. Quarterback Gavin Forrester, who was named to the North roster for the Touchstone Energy Bowl this week, rushed 12 times for 159 yards and three touchdowns and completed 11-of-15 passes for 103 yards with no interceptions in the victory. Jakorey Dodd added 117 yards and a touchdown on just nine carries for Blue Ridge.
Class 3A No. 1 Belton-Honea Path (5-0) at Chapman (0-5)
A tough start this season should only get tougher for Chapman Friday as the Panthers host top-ranked BHP. Chapman fell behind 35-0 in the second quarter last week before falling to Christ Church, 48-20. Josiah Copeland had 94 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown to lead the Panthers. A bright spot for Chapman happened this week when defensive lineman Khamari Turner was selected to play for the North squad of all-stars at the Touchstone Energy Bowl this postseason.
The Bears are coming off a 49-0 win over Palmetto. BHP has scored at least 42 points in every game this season and has outscored opponents, 225-44.
