Week 7 Previews: Spartanburg County
REGION II-5A
No. 6 Dorman (5-1, 3-0) at Spartanburg (3-3, 2-1)
A pair of defenses coming off dominant performances highlight this year’s edition of the “City Rivalry.” In a 52-0 win at Wade Hampton last Friday, Spartanburg allowed 50 yards of total offense. Meanwhile, the Vikings offense piled up 434 total yards of balanced offense – 221 rushing and 213 passing. Trenton Lynch had 127 yards and a touchdown on just eight carries, while Trey Burke completed 10-of-15 passes for 183 yards with touchdown throws to four different receivers.
In Dorman’s 34-0 win over Boiling Springs, the Cavaliers allowed just 80 yards of total offense. Nick Means ran 17 times for 116 yards and two touchdowns to lead Dorman’s offense. Isaac Tate added 87 yards and a score on just eight carries. Meek Slydell completed 8-of-13 passes for 113 yards and one touchdown – a 57-yard pass to Tre’Gan Mickler on Dorman’s first offensive snap. Mickler finished with 80 yards on four receptions.
No. 9 Byrnes (4-2, 2-1) at Gaffney (4-2, 3-0)
Another rivalry involving teams fighting for the region championship takes place at The Reservation Friday. Last week, Byrnes jumped out to a 35-7 halftime lead and went on to a 42-27 win over Riverside. Six different Rebels collected sacks to lead the defensive effort. Tre Segarra ran for 169 yards and two touchdowns on 19 attempts for Byrnes, while Caine Rogers completed 11-of-13 passes for 148 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. Chanin Harris was the top receiver with six catches for 79 yards and a score.
Gaffney’s coming off a wild 40-35 win at Eastside last Friday in which the Indians recovered an onside kick with 38 seconds left to seal the win. Banks Bouton had 108 yards passing and 104 rushing with two touchdowns for Gaffney, while Josiah Hill ran 17 times for 120 yards and three touchdowns.
Wade Hampton (0-6, 0-3) at Boiling Springs (3-3, 1-2)
Boiling Springs is looking to rebound from a rough trip to Dorman last Friday. The Bulldogs were held to 80 yards of total offense in the 34-0 loss. Ta’mi’jay Brown had 16 tackles for Boiling Springs’ defense, while Jamarcus Means had 11 stops.
Wade Hampton’s struggles continued last week in a 52-0 home loss to Spartanburg. The Generals were held to 50 yards of total offense in losing their 20th consecutive game. Angel Gomez had 11 tackles, including eight solo stops, to lead Wade Hampton’s defense.
REGION III-3A
Chapman (0-6, 0-0) at No. 5 Mountain View (6-0, 1-0)
Mountain View is one of only three unbeaten teams left in the Upstate and it’s dominant season continued last week as the Stars jumped out to a 35-8 lead in the first quarter and rolled on to a 64-14 win over Union County. Standout quarterback Mak Anderson, who left the game in the second quarter, completed 9-of-11 passes for 161 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions. He also ran six times for 45 yards and a score. KD Hainsworth caught four passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns, and also ran a reverse 22 yards for a score. Dylan McKey ran for a team-high 85 yards also for MVP.
Chapman was on a bye last week following a 45-0 loss to one of those other unbeaten teams, Belton-Honea Path, in Week 5. The Panthers were held to 110 yards of total offense in getting shut out for the third time this season. Jasiah Copeland rushed for 65 yards on 15 carries to lead Chapman.
Broome (3-4, 0-1) at Union County (1-6, 0-1)
Broome will try to rebound from a 49-14 loss to Woodruff last week. The game was tied 14-14 early in the second quarter before Woodruff pulled away. Spencer Dearybury completed 17-of-28 passes for 214 yards with a touchdown and an interception for the Centurions. Reece Waugerman had six catches for 69 yards, while Brayden Simpson caught three passes for 65 yards and a score also for Broome.
Union County is coming off a 64-14 loss to Mountain View. Shiro Crosby rushed for 84 yards on seven carries, while Qa Brannon passed for 106 yards and rushed for 71 and a touchdown for the Yellow Jackets. Dreshawn Mills had a 97-yard kickoff return for Union’s other touchdown.
REGION I-2A
No. 3 Clinton (4-3, 1-0) at No. 10 Chesnee (4-2, 1-0)
There’s plenty of football left after Friday, but this top 10 matchup sure feels like it could determine the region champion. Chesnee is looking to keep the momentum going after a 48-19 win at Blacksburg last Friday. Blake Cochran ran eight times for 140 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Eagles. Evan-Reece Lawter passed for 129 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 106 and another score. Braylon Blanton was Lawter’s top target as he caught six passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns. Kale Thrift had eight tackles, including three tackles-for-loss, to lead Chesnee’s defensive effort.
After a loss to Daniel dropped Clinton to 2-3, the Red Devils have outscored their last two opponents 109-6. Clinton piled up 435 rushing yards on just 30 attempts in its 49-6 win over Liberty last week. Javen Cook carried 10 times for 132 yards and four touchdowns, while Angelo Cromer had five carries for 121 yards and a score.
Blacksburg (0-7, 0-1) at Landrum (3-3, 0-0)
After a bye last week, Landrum will look to get back on track at home Friday. Prior to the off week, the Cardinals fell to Blue Ridge 63-28 in Week 5. Ty Foster completed 16-of-20 passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions to lead Landrum. Trey Nesbitt caught five passes for 60 yards and threw a 64-yard touchdown pass also for the Cardinals. Braylon Revis led Landrum receivers with five catches for 84 yards.
Blacksburg is coming off a 48-19 loss to Chesnee last week. Trevon Clark rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns and also passed for another score for the Wildcats.
