Week 10 Previews: Spartanburg Area

REGION II-5A

No. 10 Dorman (7-2, 5-1) at Eastside (4-5, 1-5)

Dorman can wrap up the region championship with a victory Friday. The Cavaliers positioned themselves here with an impressive 20-0 win over Gaffney last week. Dorman came up with three interceptions and a pair of key fourth-down stops on defense to earn the shutout. An Indians’ offense that has displayed a strong running game this season was held to just 51 yards rushing. Nick Means rushed for 97 yards and a touchdown, while Carter Nash ran five times for 47 yards and a score to lead Dorman’s offense.

Eastside snapped a five-game losing streak last Friday with a 42-0 win over Wade Hampton. Quarterback Peyton Schrader’s five-touchdown night was nearly perfect. Schrader completed 11-of-13 passes for 146 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He rushed 12 times for 110 yards and three scores and had six tackles, including three tackles-for-loss, on defense. Cayden Workman caught five passes for 64 yards and both touchdowns, rushed for 41 yards on two carries and had an interception and a fumble recovery on defense. Lucas Tankersley and Lyndez Smith had eight tackles apiece to lead the Eagles’ shutout. Tankersley and Smith combined for seven of Eastside’s 19 tackles-for-loss and Tankersley also had an interception.

Byrnes (6-3, 4-2) at Boiling Springs (4-5, 2-4)

Byrnes can wrap up third place in the region with a win Friday. The Rebels had a dominant performance last week with a 42-7 win over Spartanburg. Byrnes outgained the Vikings 554-84. More than half of that yardage came courtesy of standout running back Tre Segarra. The junior rushed for 255 yards and four touchdowns on 17 carries and also caught three passes for 27 yards. Jacobi Fuller added 77 yards rushing and caught a touchdown pass. That was one of two touchdowns for Caine Rogers, who completed 18-of-26 passes for 181 yards. It was the second week in a row that the Rebels’ defense didn’t allow a point. Spartanburg’s lone score came on an interception return for a touchdown on the game’s opening drive. Jackson Delaney had two sacks to lead the defensive effort.

Boiling Springs will try to rebound from a 27-20 overtime loss at Riverside. The Bulldogs saw a 20-7 lead going into the fourth quarter completely disappear when the Warriors scored on a 16-yard touchdown pass on the final play of regulation. Boiling Springs’ Taly Labra blocked the extra point to force overtime, but Riverside scored first in OT and then held the Bulldogs scoreless. Imri Logan passed for 120 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 32 yards on six carries, while Izael Johnson led Boiling Springs with 77 yards rushing on six attempts. Dennis Glenn led the Bulldogs’ defense with 11 tackles, including three sacks.

Wade Hampton (0-9, 0-6) at Gaffney (6-3, 5-1)

Gaffney is also looking to bounce back from a shutout as the Indians fell at Dorman, 20-0, last week. That marked Gaffney’s first shutout loss since falling to Boiling Springs, 38-0, on Oct. 14, 2016. Banks Bouton completed 17-of-29 passes for 226 yards, but suffered three interceptions and was shut down in the rushing department. Chas Smith caught nine passes for 155 yards to lead the Indians. 

Wade Hampton is one of three Greenville County schools to ever beat Gaffney more than once. Greenville and Greer are the others. The Generals, who are 4-16 in the series, will need a huge upset Friday to avoid suffering back-to-back winless seasons. Wade Hampton’s coming off a 42-0 loss at Eastside, its third shutout loss in the last four weeks. Nick Gregar had 11 tackles, while Angel Gomez had 10 for the Generals.

Riverside (4-5, 3-3) at Spartanburg (5-4, 4-2)

Spartanburg will try to bounce back from a rough 42-7 loss at Byrnes last Friday. Playing without injured star running back Trenton Lynch, the Vikings were outgained 554-84 in total offense. Spartanburg took a 7-0 lead on the first possession of the game when Christian Davis returned an interception 27 yards for a touchdown, but was blanked the rest of the night.

Riverside pulled out a 27-20 overtime win against Boiling Springs last Friday for its first victory over a Spartanburg County team since a win over the Bulldogs in 2014. Riverside trailed 20-7 going into the fourth quarter before rallying. On the final play of regulation, Gideon Merhib threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Camilo Morrison to tie the game at 20. Boiling Springs blocked the extra point to force overtime. In OT, Merhib ran for a four-yard touchdown to give the Warriors the lead and they stopped the Bulldogs on fourth down to complete the comeback win. Merhib completed 15-of-23 passes for 255 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions, while rushing 20 times for 121 yards and two scores to lead Riverside.

REGION III-3A

No. 5 Woodruff (8-1, 3-0) at Union County (1-8, 0-3)

Woodruff can complete its first nine-win regular season since 2015 with a victory Friday. Following the Wolverines’ big win over previously unbeaten Mountain View in Week 8, there was no let down last Friday as Woodruff topped Chapman 31-10. Star running back Aiden Gibson was a workhorse as he carried 29 times for 172 yards and three touchdowns. Connor Davis completed 21-of-33 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for 46 yards on seven attempts, also for the Wolverines. Shaun Graybill had six tackles, including three tackles-for-loss and a sack, to lead Woodruff’s defense.

Union County was off last week but is coming off a tough 30-27 loss to Chapman in Week 8. Qa Brannon completed 13-of-20 passes for 193 yards with a touchdown, but suffered three interceptions in the loss.

Broome (4-5, 1-2) at Chapman (1-8, 1-2)

Friday’s winner of this matchup will claim third-place in the region and earn the right to host a playoff game next week. Chapman is trying to avoid the most losses it’s suffered in a season since going 1-9 in 2008. The Panthers fell behind 17-3 at the half last Friday against Woodruff and went on to a 31-10 loss.

In addition to the other things on the line Friday, Broome is trying to even its overall record to .500. It will be without the services of quarterback Jameson Dearybury, who suffered a broken arm during last week’s 55-12 loss to Mountain View. After falling behind 7-0 early last Friday, the Centurions answered when Dearybury connected with Asher Littlejohn on a 56-yard touchdown. Tyqwon Booker rushed for 91 yards and Broome’s other score on a third-quarter touchdown. Dearybury, who suffered his injury on the ensuing two-point conversion attempt, completed 8-of-14 passes for 173 yards. Littlejohn finished with 85 yards receiving on two receptions and posted a team-high eight tackles on defense.

REGION I-2A

Landrum (3-6, 0-3) at Chesnee (4-5, 1-2)

There’s not much on the line in this one, playoff-wise. Chesnee has wrapped up third place in the region and will hit the road to somewhere in the Midlands next week to open the playoffs, while this will be the season finale for Landrum. The Eagles stepped outside of region play last week and ran for 272 yards and five touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough as they fell to Crescent 45-36. Evan-Reece Lawter rushed for 137 yards and two touchdowns, and passed for 81 yards but suffered two interceptions. Kale Thrift had 108 yards rushing and three touchdowns, while Braylon Blanton caught four passes for 66 yards also for Chesnee.

Landrum is coming off its fifth consecutive loss as the Cardinals fell to Liberty, 40-15, last Friday. AJ Lindsey’s one-yard touchdown run in the second quarter tied the game at 7-7, but Liberty answered to take a 14-7 lead into halftime. The Red Devils pulled away in the second half as Landrum’s lone score came on a 34-yard touchdown pass from Ty Foster to Trey Nesbitt. Foster then threw to Hayden Martindale for a two-point conversion.
