Week 2 Preview Capsules: Spartanburg County
Greenville at 5A No. 2 Gaffney
Series record: Gaffney leads the series 32-17-1
Last week: Greenville lost to Riverside 48-26; Gaffney beat J.L. Mann 42-40 in overtime
Radio/TV/Internet: WZZQ 104.3 FM
Location: The Reservation, 140 Twin Lake Rd., Gaffney
Who to watch for Greenville: QB Banks Bouton, DL Jair Simmons
Who to watch for Gaffney: LB Andrew Ruppe, WR Jamarcus Smith
What to know: The Indians survived a wild game against J.L. Mann last week, with Ruppe both scoring the go-ahead TD in overtime and providing the two-point conversion that proved to be the winning margin. Gaffney also got a huge game from Smith, who had nearly 200 yards receiving.
3A No. 5 Mountain View (2-0) at St. Joseph’s (1-1)
Series record: First meeting.
Last week: Mountain View won at Southside Christian 49-7; St. Joseph’s lost to Chapman 35-21.
Location: St. Joseph’s Catholic School, 100 St Joseph’s Dr, Greenville
Who to watch for Mountain View: RB Jaylen McGill, WR K.D. Hainsworth, DL Allen Edmondson
Who to watch for St. Joseph’s: QB Cade Alt, RB William Gillespie, RB Lucas Salgado
What to know: MVP allowed its first points of the season when Southside Christian took the opening drive for a touchdown in Week 1, but the Stars answered in a big way and blanked the Sabres the rest of the way. Hainsworth had a monster night with five receptions for 237 yards and four touchdowns.
The Knights are coming off a tough loss in which Chapman scored two touchdowns in the final 2:25 of the game to pull out the win. On a night when Alt suffered an ankle injury in the first half, Gillespie ran for a 44-yard touchdown and a two-point conversion with five seconds left in the third quarter to tie the game at 21-21. Gillespie finished with 91 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
Emerald (2-0) at 3A No. 6 Woodruff (2-0)
Series record: Woodruff leads the all-time series 11-4.
Last week: Emerald beat Travelers Rest 38-0; Woodruff beat Fountain Inn 30-27
Radio/TV/Internet: Wolverine Sports Network (meridix.com)
Location: W.L. Varner Stadium, 710 Cross Anchor Rd., Woodruff
Who to watch for Emerald: ATH Key Holloway, QB Beau Hite
Who to watch for Woodruff: QB T.J. Morris, RB Aiden Gibson
What to know: The Vikings look like a completely different team this season, with two big wins. Hite’s play has been part of the reason why. The Wolverines, meanwhile, have had no trouble scoring, but they’ve had to survive a couple of thrillers to get to 2-0.
Spartanburg (1-1) at Broome (1-1)
Series record: The Vikings lead the series 23-4
Last week: Spartanburg lost to Dutch Fork 24-7; Broome beat Chesnee 34-27
Radio/TV/Internet: Fox Sports Spartanburg 98.3 FM/1400 AM (Spartanburg); Cox Sports Broadcasting (Broome)
Location: Royal Stadium, 381 Cherry Hill Rd., Spartanburg
Who to watch for Spartanburg: LB Cam’Rich Smith, WR Justin Rice, RB Trenton Lynch
Who to watch for Broome: QB Jameson Dearybury, WR Brayden Simpson, ATH Tre’Sean Suber
What to know: The Vikings are coming off a loss to the No. 1-ranked 5A team and two-time defending state champion Dutch Fork. Spartanburg played well last week before faltering at the end. Broome lit up Chesnee behind Dearybury’s 300-plus yard passing night, but gave up a couple of long TD drives on the ground as Chesnee made it interesting.

Boiling Springs (2-0) at Chapman (1-1)
Series record: Boiling Springs leads the series 24-10-1.
Last week: Boiling Springs beat Mauldin 31-12; Chapman beat St. Joseph’s 34-21
Radio/TV/Internet: upstateprepcast.net will have a broadcast for both teams.
Location: Panther Stadium, 1420 Compton Bridge Rd., Inman
Who to watch for Boiling Springs: DL Dennis Glenn, QB Lincoln Huskey, WR Kyle Patterson
Who to watch for Chapman: LB/RB Chanson Mickles, DE/TE Khamari Turner, RB Justin Dawkins
What to know: The Panthers exploded in the rushing game last week, as Dawkins rushed for five TDs and more than 200 yards. They’ll likely need him against a talented Boiling Springs DL led by Glenn. Offensively, the Bulldogs rely on a solid ground game and the Huskey/Patterson connection.
Dorman (1-1) at Greenwood (1-0)
Series record: Dorman leads the all-time series 18-9.
Last week: Dorman lost to Grayson (Ga.) 53-0; Greenwood beat Beaufort 37-18
Radio/TV/Internet: WQUL 101.7 (Dorman)
Location: J.W. Babb Stadium, 1816 Cokesbury Rd., Greenwood
Who to watch for Dorman: QB Makorean Anderson, RB Nick Means, LB Dru Darby
Who to watch for Greenwood: QB Triston Lewis, OL Robert Stevens
What to know: Lewis is a true dual-threat guy at QB, and could give the Cavaliers fits when running behind an experienced offensive line, particularly Stevens, who’s one of the strongest players in the state. Anderson will likely make his first start for the Cavaliers, and he and fellow sophomore Means have shown glimpses of explosiveness offensively.
Walhalla (2-0) at Chesnee (0-2)
Series record: Chesnee leads the all-time series 8-2.
Last week: Walhalla beat Pickens 49-16; Chesnee lost to Broome 34-27
Radio/TV/Internet: upstateprepcast.net
Location: Eagle Stadium, 795 S. Alabama Ave., Chesnee
Who to watch for Walhalla: RB/LB Silas Parish, DB Jack Williams
Who to watch for Chesnee: RB Kale Thrift, ATH Kjay Proctor
What to know: Chesnee fell to Broome last week, but might have discovered a little something: they can absolutely pound the ball. One Eagles’ scoring drive covered 99 yards and went for 21 plays, with 20 of them on the ground and 14 of those runs by Proctor. Thrift was also a workhorse, and if the Eagles can continue to run the ball at will, they’ll get much better.
Ware Shoals (0-2) at Landrum (1-1)
Series record: Ware Shoals leads the overall series 19-2.
Last week: Ware Shoals lost to Ninety Six 41-30; Landrum beat Berea 46-6
Radio/TV/Internet: upstateprepcast.net
Location: Cardinal Stadium, 18118 Asheville Hwy., Campobello
Who to watch for Ware Shoals: QB Jayden Johnson, WR Jayce Medlin
Who to watch for Landrum: ATH Titus Poore, QB Ty Foster, RB/LB A.J. Lindsey
What to know: The Hornets had Ninety Six on the ropes last week before the Wildcats’ Zay King took over. They’ll have another tough matchup with the Cardinals. Titus Poore plays a little bit of everywhere, and Foster has shown a lot of growth at the QB position.
