Week 10 Previews: Greenville County

THURSDAY

REGION I-5A

Mauldin (4-5, 2-4) at JL Mann (1-8, 1-5)

After going 3-29 over the past three seasons, Mauldin will try to secure its first non-losing season since 2021 with a win Thursday. The Mavericks piled up 565 yards of total offense in a 49-13 win over Woodmont last Friday. Starting quarterback Reddick Langston completed 4-of-4 passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns, while Peyton Myers threw for 112 yards and a score. Taurus Thomason had 120 of Mauldin’s 340 yards rushing, while Kamari Cannon had 100 yards on 10 carries. Thomason and Cannon ran for two touchdowns apiece. Micah McClintock caught four passes for 94 yards and a score. Lucas Hagedorn led Mauldin’s defense with 10 tackles and two forced fumbles.

JL Mann fell behind 49-0 at the half last Friday and went on to a 56-14 loss at Greenwood. The Patriots were outgained 416-138 for the game. Aiden Williams rushed for 48 yards and both touchdowns for Mann.

REGION I-4A

Southside (0-9, 0-4) at Fountain Inn (5-4, 2-2)

After back-to-back losses to region leaders Wren and Westside, Fountain Inn rebounded with a big 35-31 win at Emerald last Friday. The Fury can wrap up third place in the region with a victory. After Emerald took a 31-28 lead on a field goal with two minutes left last week, Sam Holliday ran for his fourth touchdown of the game with less than a minute left. Colby Flood sealed the win with an interception as time expired. Fountain Inn rallied from a 28-14 third quarter deficit on touchdown runs by Bojack Johnson and Holliday. Holliday finished with 236 yards passing and 142 rushing to lead the Fury. BJ Curenton caught 11 passes for 108 yards and Johnson finished with 63 yards rushing also for Fountain Inn.

Southside will be trying to avoid its third consecutive 0-10 season. The Tigers were shut out for the fifth consecutive week last Friday as they fell to Wren, 58-0. Southside was held to 21 yards of total offense in the loss.

FRIDAY

REGION I-5A

No. 8 TL Hanna (8-1, 6-0) at Greenville (6-3, 4-2)

After a rough game last week, Greenville will try to get back on track against the region champion this Friday. The Red Raiders traveled to Hillcrest looking to secure at least third place in the region with a win last Friday. Instead, Greenville was held to 154 yards of total offense in a 45-14 loss. A disastrous third quarter for the Red Raiders saw their deficit grow from 24-0 at halftime to 45-0. Kiishawn Farrow ran for a fourth quarter touchdown to help Greenville avoid the shutout and threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Arkies Shell on the last play of the game. Jayden Rice carried eight times for 74 of the Red Raiders’ 89 yards rushing. That total also included a 24-yard run by punter Will Major on a fake punt.

TL Hanna is coming off a 31-14 win over Easley. Emari Nance ran 11 times for 107 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Yellow Jackets.

Hillcrest (6-3, 4-2) at Woodmont (2-7, 1-5)

The Golden Strip portion of Woodmont’s schedule continues this week as the Wildcats will try to snap a 16-game losing streak in the series with Hillcrest. Last Friday, Woodmont allowed 565 yards of total offense in a 49-13 loss at Mauldin. Bradley Crowell kicked a pair of second-quarter field goals and Jackson Haymes threw a fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Devonte Taylor to account for the Wildcats’ scoring.

Hillcrest can wrap up third place in the region with a victory. Last week, the Rams rode a dominant defensive effort to a 45-14 win over Greenville. After taking a 24-0 lead into halftime, Hillcrest had an interception on the first play of the second half. That led to one of Jackson Free’s five touchdowns (three rushing, two passing). La’Zarious Stephens’ 49-yard interception return for a touchdown later in the third quarter pushed the lead to 45-0. The Rams allowed 112 of Greenville’s 154 total yards in a running clock the rest of the way. Ny Allen led Hillcrest’s offense with 99 yards rushing, while Josh Smith rushed for 64.

REGION II-5A

No. 10 Dorman (7-2, 5-1) at Eastside (4-5, 1-5)

Eastside wraps up the regular season by trying to upset a Dorman team trying to wrap up a region championship. The Eagles snapped a five-game losing streak last Friday with a 42-0 win over Wade Hampton. Eastside quarterback Peyton Schrader’s five-touchdown night was nearly perfect. Schrader completed 11-of-13 passes for 146 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He rushed 12 times for 110 yards and three scores and had six tackles, including three tackles-for-loss, on defense. Cayden Workman caught five passes for 64 yards and both touchdowns, rushed for 41 yards on two carries and had an interception and a fumble recovery on defense. Lucas Tankersley and Lyndez Smith had eight tackles apiece to lead the Eagles’ shutout. Tankersley and Smith combined for seven of Eastside’s 19 tackles-for-loss and Tankersley also had an interception.

Dorman is coming off an impressive 20-0 win over Gaffney last week. The Cavaliers came up with three interceptions and a pair of key fourth-down stops on defense. An Indians’ offense that has displayed a strong running game this season was held to just 51 yards rushing. Nick Means rushed for 97 yards and a touchdown, while Carter Nash ran five times for 47 yards and a score to lead Dorman’s offense.

Wade Hampton (0-9, 0-6) at Gaffney (6-3, 5-1)

Did you know? Wade Hampton is one of three Greenville County schools to ever beat Gaffney more than once. Greenville and Greer are the others. The Generals, who are 4-16 in the series, will need a huge upset Friday to avoid suffering back-to-back winless seasons. Wade Hampton’s coming off a 42-0 loss at Eastside, its third shutout loss in the last four weeks. Nick Gregar had 11 tackles, while Angel Gomez had 10 for the Generals.

Gaffney is also looking to bounce back from a shutout as the Indians fell at Dorman, 20-0, last week. That marked Gaffney’s first shutout loss since falling to Boiling Springs, 38-0, on Oct. 14, 2016. Banks Bouton completed 17-of-29 passes for 226 yards, but suffered three interceptions and was shut down in the rushing department. Chas Smith caught nine passes for 155 yards to lead the Indians. 

Riverside (4-5, 3-3) at Spartanburg (5-4, 4-2)

After beating a Spartanburg County team for the first time in 11 years last week, Riverside tries to make it two in a row this Friday. The Warriors pulled out a 27-20 overtime win against Boiling Springs last Friday. Riverside trailed 20-7 going into the fourth quarter before rallying. On the final play of regulation, Gideon Merhib threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Camilo Morrison to tie the game at 20. Boiling Springs blocked the extra point to force overtime. In OT, Merhib ran for a four-yard touchdown to give the Warriors the lead and they stopped the Bulldogs on fourth down to complete the comeback win. Merhib completed 15-of-23 passes for 255 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions, while rushing 20 times for 121 yards and two scores to lead Riverside.

Spartanburg will try to bounce back from a rough 42-7 loss at Byrnes last Friday. Playing without injured star running back Trenton Lynch, the Vikings were outgained 554-84 in total offense. Spartanburg took a 7-0 lead on the first possession of the game when Christian Davis returned an interception 27 yards for a touchdown, but was blanked the rest of the night.

REGION II-4A

Berea (2-7, 1-4) at Blue Ridge (5-4, 2-3)

Blue Ridge will try to secure its first winning season since 2014 with a victory Friday night. The Tigers are coming off a tough 66-21 loss to Daniel last week. Blue Ridge North-South all-star quarterback Gavin Forrester accounted for all three touchdowns (two passing, one rushing). Forrester finished with 79 yards passing and 79 rushing. Braylon Edwards caught three passes for 51 yards and one touchdown.

Berea is coming off its second consecutive win over rival Travelers Rest by the exact same score of 24-21 each year. Freshman quarterback Abel Scogin kept for a nine-yard touchdown run to give the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead early on. Braylon Fields’ four-yard touchdown run pushed Berea’s lead to 24-14 in the fourth quarter. Fields finished with a team-high 73 yards on 12 carries. Freshman Moses Hendrix had an interception to lead the Bulldogs’ defensive effort.

No. 5 Daniel (8-1, 5-0) at Greer (4-5, 4-1)

Greer will try to get to .500 overall and force a three-way tie for the region championship with Seneca and Daniel Friday. The Yellow Jackets were off last Friday after suffering its first region loss, 42-13, at Seneca in Week 8. Despite the lopsided loss, Greer actually rushed for more than 300 yards as a team. Calvin McCoy had 125 yards on 27 carries, while Zy Foster had 121 yards on 13 attempts, including a touchdown. Xavier Sammet had a tough night passing with just 66 yards, but did rush for 59 yards despite being sacked three times.

Daniel will try to wrap up its eighth consecutive region title and 27th overall. The Lions are coming off a 66-21 win over Blue Ridge. Sophomore quarterback Jace Grass threw for 361 yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions for the Lions. Trey Wimbley caught six passes for 112 yards and two scores.

Travelers Rest (2-7, 0-5) at Pickens (2-7, 1-4)

Travelers Rest will be trying to avoid going winless in region play for the second consecutive season. The Devildogs are coming off a 24-21 loss to rival Berea last week. Travelers Rest has an 8-29 record in the Pickens series, including a 56-0 loss last season.

Pickens is coming off a 48-14 loss to Seneca last Friday. The Blue Flame were outgained, 502-121. Nolan Hardin completed all six of his passes for 61 yards and rushed for 28 yards and a score for Pickens.

REGION II-3A

Southside Christian (4-5, 3-1) at Carolina (2-7, 0-4)

Southside Christian will look to build off a huge 31-0 win over rival Christ Church last Friday. A win this week could wrap up second place in the region for the Sabres. DJ Lee rushed 31 times for 139 yards and a touchdown to lead Southside Christian. Max Breit completed 4-of-6 passes for 77 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions, and he ran 13 times for 62 yards and another score. Cole Brancati led the shutout effort with eight tackles, including two tackles-for-loss.

Carolina will need to pull the upset to avoid its 10th consecutive season without a region win. The Trojans are coming off a 42-0 loss to region champion Powdersville last Friday.

Palmetto (1-8, 1-3) at Christ Church (6-3, 2-2)

Christ Church will try to bounce back from a 31-0 loss to Southside Christian last week. The Cavaliers’ typically powerful rushing attack was held to 39 yards on 22 attempts. Judd Windham threw for 173 yards to lead Christ Church, which suffered three turnovers and didn’t force any. Anthony Atkins had 12 tackles to lead the Cavs defensively.

Palmetto is coming off a 42-21 loss to St. Joseph’s. Kaleb Ricketts ran 15 times for 152 yards and a touchdown, while passing for 46 yards, to lead the Mustangs. Preston Wilder ran for 75 yards and a score also for Palmetto.

No. 9 Powdersville (7-2, 4-0) at St. Joseph’s (5-4, 2-2)

St. Joseph’s will look to build off a night of big plays in its 42-21 win at Palmetto last Friday. Playing without injured star running back Mack Rambo, the Knights still piled up 370 yards on the ground. Paul Norman ran for a 68-yard touchdown and a 35-yard score and he finished with 133 yards on only seven carries. Mayson Ludolph did the heavy lifting for the rushing attack with 94 yards and a touchdown on 23 attempts. Jay Sanders had 52 yards on one carry, while Sam Patterson rushed eight times for 48 yards and a score. Patterson also had a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Quarterback Jack Stewart scored on a 49-yard option keeper.

Powdersville will try to go a perfect 5-0 in region play for the second year in a row. The Patriots are coming off a 42-0 win over Carolina last week.
